These can be used as appliques, key chains or jewelry, or anything else you can think of. American crochet terms used. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Basic Crochet Skills SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS The size of the finished skull appliques will depend on the type of yarn or thread you use. The DK weight, fingering weight and size 3 crochet thread skulls will measure about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches in diameter and the worsted weight skulls will measure about 2 inches.

Recommended with this pattern

  • Most any size thread or yarn can be used- For the examples I used Tahki Cotton Classic for the DK weight and Catania SMC or fingering weight. I used Sugar N' Cream cotton yarn for the worsted weight skull applique. You can also use Aunt Lydia's size 3 crochet thread. 2.75mm crochet hook is needed for the DK weight, fingering weight, or size 3 crochet thread and size 3.25mm crochet hook for the worsted weight yarn. If you are using size 3 thread, DK weight yarn or fingering weight yarn and want to add some beads to your sugar skull then you'll need 26 size 6/0 seed beads. Tapestry needle, craft glue and scissors are needed as well.

The Velvet Heart
Hi! I am a military brat who married a Kansas boy and now we are carving out a life on the prairie. I started crocheting while staying home to raise our three children. Occasionally I break out some worsted weight yarn, but for the most part, I am pretty obsessed with thread crochet, especially when it involves beads. I sell mostly crochet jewelry patterns. I draw a huge amount of influence from my love of mid century style. Everything from color palette (turquoise blue, pink and mint green!) to the types of jewelry worn then, like sweater clips and big chunky beads. My style, though, is decidedly bohemian. I hope you enjoy my designs! Find me on Facebook under The Velvet Heart :)
