Woven Stitch Crochet
I have been crocheting and designing since I was a young girl. ~~Happy Crocheting! In the beginning--- I was taught to crochet by Maude Baker who made very frilly doilies out of very fine crochet thread and very small steel crochet hooks. Fascinated me as a sixth grader. I wanted to learn so she decided to start me on pot holders with yarn and a large hook. I made one and then wanted to make a very large doily with pansies all around the edge. It took a long time but I was hooked!!! I continued to crochet from then on but was never satisfied with just one color and didn't like the idea of how it looked when I had to tie off one color and start another. By this time we were living in New Mexico and I loved the hand woven Navajo rugs but couldn't afford the prices they were bringing. My sister-in-law came to visit from Michigan and hinted that she would like a set of thunderbird placemats in turquoise and off-white. So, I drew up some designs and started to crochet with 4-ply acrylic yarn. I hated the way they looked with all the ends and they did not have the thickness or body I wanted. Aha!!! That's when I devised the method of changing colors without cutting off the old color and by running the color not being used through the inside of the double crochet. It also gave the piece stability and the desired thickness. I made those placemats and entered them in the Otero County Fair in Alamogordo, New Mexico. They won!
