4 Unconventional Ways to Start a Granny Square

The classic granny square will never go out of style, but it’s always fun to put a twist on that traditional design. One easy option is to swap out the center of the square with something more creative than the original first round or two.

This gives a pop of design to the center of each square, allows you to create themed squares and makes the work more fun.

4 creative centers for crochet granny squares

Each of the mini-tutorials in this article shows you how to crochet a granny square with a unique center. We’ll take you through the center design, then you can use the classic crochet granny square pattern to finish off the square

I changed colors to best showcase the center of each square, but you can opt to change colors more frequently or not at all. Get creative with your color play to make different types of squares using the same patterns.

Circle center granny squares

While granny squares are almost always worked in the round, you don’t usually find a circle in the center. But this design option shouldn’t be overlooked: With a circle in the middle, you can combine the soft, curved shape of the circle with the graphic, angular edges of the granny square, creating a beautiful pattern.

circles in crochet granny squares

When you work the circles in one color and the rest of the square in another, it creates the effects of polka dots. You can also work each round of each square in a different color, crochet each circle-in-a-square motif in a solid color or play with any number of variations to get a unique look for your granny square project.

No matter what size you want your circle to be, the basic size will be the same. You’ll make a double crochet circle, grow the circle (according to the mathematical rules of making a flat crochet circle) and finally turn the circle into a square using the basic design of the classic granny square. Let’s take a look at the details:

If your granny square looks a little wonky — not quite like a square — don’t worry! You can fix this by blocking your square. The more rounds of granny stitch you make, the more square-like the motif will look.

Granny square with a floral center

One of the most popular variations on the granny square is the floral granny square, where a flower sits in the center of the square. There are many floral crochet square patterns, including some that lay flat and others that are more 3-D with the flower popping off of the background. Here’s one simple version of the floral crochet granny square.
