How to make a crochet bow

If you know how to crochet a rectangle with basic stitches, you can crochet this bow!

What you need:

Crocheting the rectangle

Start by chaining 16.

Finish off and weave in ends. Now you have a basic rectangle (how easy was that?)!

If you pinch this rectangle in the center, you’ll see the bow shape start to take form.

Forming the bow shape

Cut a length of yarn to tie the bow in the center. Approximately 6″ is a good length for this particular bow, but you can vary it depending on whether you want this yarn wrap to be very narrow or very thick.

Lay the yarn flat, placing the right side of the rectangle onto the top of the yarn. Bring the two ends of the yarn together over the wrong side of the bow, securing it in a tight knot. This gives you the shape of your bow!

Wrap the yarn around the center of the bow that you have just created. The best way to do this is to bring one end around the bow from the top and the other around the bow from the bottom.

Continue wrapping until there is very little yarn left, and then create another knot at the the back of the bow.

Weave in any remaining yarn ends. There is your completed crochet bow!

More ways to customize your crochet bow

There are dozens of variations that you can make to change the look of your crochet bow. Check out a few ideas below.

Use a contrasting color for the center wrap

Changing up the yarn wrap is the easiest variation on this bow. Change the color of the wrap for a more dramatic design. You can also use a chunkier yarn or a longer length of yarn to create a bow with a thicker center.

Try a different weight of yarn and different stitches

Unlike the one in the tutorial, this bow is made with double crochet stitches, a bulky weight yarn and a size J crochet hook. It’s also slightly more square in shape, which enhances the bulkiness of the bow. Here’s a quick pattern for this bow:

  • Ch 12.
  • Row 1: Double crochet in third ch from hook and each st across.
  • Row 2-4: Ch 3 to turn. Double crochet in each st across.
  • Finish off and weave in ends. Use yarn wrap to create bow shape.

Add a decorative edging

You can give your bow a more polished finish by adding a decorative crochet edging. The example above uses a slip stitch edging around the entire bow. You could add a frillier, decorative edging (such as picots or shell stitch) for a completely different style of bow.

Note that the edging is always added after you’ve completed all of the rows of the rectangle but before you wrap it with yarn to create the bow shape.

More ideas for customizing your bow:

  • Make them extra large or super tiny
  • Vary how narrow the bow is
  • Change the stitches used to make the rectangle
  • Mix up the yarn you use
