I made a heart template and smoothed royal icing on it. I let it dry for two days. It was decorated with butter cream roses and leaves. To attach the heart to the cake I used wooden dowels and I had one of the three dowels lower in the cake to give it a tilted look. I placed it on the cake when I got the cake to its destination. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Make the royal icing heart a few days before the event. Then keep it in a safe place until you are ready for it. Handle with care so you don't crack it.
