Magnolia Wedding Cake

Share a little about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create this cake The cake has a tall lean look with a faint blush of color. The textures mimic the bride's dress of ruffled ribbon roses and a tucked ribbon bodice. Because this was for a destination wedding, layers and fondant work were done by a local baker. Gum paste magnolia and cake design were of course, my own. What are you most proud of? My concentration was the focal magnolia. I gave very careful attention to the contrast of the simple creamy petals against it's very complex center. What advice would you give someone starting this project? My largest challenge was to design for a wedding 2000 miles away. Gum paste can be packed for careful shipment (allowing extras for breakage) but finding a baker you can trust is another matter. Good communication is essential.

Q&A with Sweet William

Garden Baker asked:
It sounds like you did the tier decorations: ruffle and ribbon rose ruffle at the destination. What a challenge! Your magnolia is beautiful, by the way!
Sweet William answered:
Thank you for following my projects, it's always good to have support. Even my beloved daughter sometimes accuses me of lunacy, cake decorating can become such an obsession!
yawen asked:
I absolutely love, love, love your work!!!!
Sweet William answered:
Really appreciate your praise.
mlm1933210 asked:
What colors did you use to achieve the blush color? Really beautiful!
Sweet William answered:
I use crystal colors...center was Brick feathered with corn starch...probably used some mix of Elegance, Shrimp, Baby pink. Would have used a hit of Kiwi. Always mix the complimentary color with the primary for more realistic affect...lighten colors with cornstarch or white, and mix your colors. No petal is only one color. Oops forgot Buttercup..
