Share a little about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create this cake 2 cake mixes and food coloring. I used a white cake mix and a red velvet cake mix. I split the white cake mix in half and added blue food coloring to the one half. You can use two white mixes and just use red food coloring but I can never get the right red so I just used the red velvet. I made very thin layers of red and white and a thick blue cake. Layer the red and white starting and ending with red. Stack the blue next to a few layers of the red/white layers so you can cut the blue down to the right size (it will probably be 3 red/white layers). Then with all those layers on top of each other cut a circle in the center all the way through all layers. Discard the outer ring of red and white and inner ring of blue. Put the outer ring of blue on top of the other full red and white white cake layers then shove the inner red and white cake center into the blue hole. You'll want to frost between all layers and the inside of the blue layer the best that you can. when finished layering the cake, frost the whole thing as you normally would. When you cut into into it, it will look like a flag!! ***My picture looks different than the yours will look if you follow the instructions. I used the inner blue layer and outer red and white ring for this cake. It looks great but it's not the right way. Next time I will do it as my instructions state.*** What are you most proud of? I'm very proud that I actually did it! I find all these ideas and think I'll do it one day and then never get around to it. I did it, the kids loved it, and it tasted great too! Can't wait for the 4th so I can make it for a party. What advice would you give someone starting this project? It's not as difficult as it sounds. I think it takes longer to explain how to do it than it actually takes to do it!! I have the difficulty level as a 3 only because there are several steps.
