Fish splash cake

Project Description

Do you sell this cake? No, just for fun Share a little about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create this cake This was my first time I used isomalt. It was fun but had trouble with the humid weather so I remelted it ,coated it with confectioners glaze and stored it correctly until right before it went on the cake. The fish and hook was gumpaste. The side was hand painted fondant. I also had a big problem with my refrigerator. When I went to take it out the next morning all the painting on the back of the cake had runned from too much moisture!!! It was heartbreaking I did not post a picture of that ugh. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Work in a climate controlled environment. Make sure you refrigerator is working right.

What you will need

This cake is incredible!!! All of it is fantastic. If you hadn't mentioned any problems, I wouldn't have known at all. My thirty year decorating veteran mother gave me the best advice yet, "don't always try so hard to do it perfect -remember they can't do what you do and they're going to think it's fantastic either way. Most people would never notice the little obsessive details so don't waste the time." :D
Belinda Schatz answered:
Thanks so much for you advice. yes I do have a problem pointing out all the problems. You can see the puddle of color to the left on the board. I wish I took a picture of it before it spent the night in the fridge. The other side looked like a abstract watercolor. My hubby bought a commercial beverage refrigerator for my cakes but way too much humidity in it. So now I move things from my regular fridge to that one and use my regular fridge when I do a cake. This is all just a hobby so far. If I was selling this cake I would be devastated and given them a big discount.

I think we all struggle with the perfection gene -it's what makes us good. And you definitely could think about selling! You have what my artist husband calls "natural gestalt" -the ability to compose with a balance that is pleasing (or something to that effect). I've discounted for flaws and, honestly, I never should have started. It ended when someone complained their way out of paying for a wedding cake. I don't do it again. Keep yourself esteem high. You're very good and I think it'd be great for you to talk to friends and family to see what they think. IMHO, you could go pro!
Belinda Schatz answered:
Wow thanks for your kind words. You put a smile on my face. I have heard many times from friends and family I should go into business. I keep thinking about it but I have had a sewing business for the past 28 years and have done ok but not really good money and I don't want a cake business to do the same. I'm getting old too 54 and recovering from routator cuff surgery. My next big cake is for my granddaughters 1st birthday the end of Jan. so this shoulder better heal fast. I have to do a lot of business education and soul searching before I go pro. I will be watching the business classes on Craftsy first. How long have you been in business? Thanks again

Beautiful cake! Please tell me how you made the fish!!
Belinda Schatz answered:
oh sorry for the slow response. I made the fish out of fondant with a little tylose powder added to it. Then just painted it with gel food coloring mixed with vodka. I covered the eye with leaf glaze to get the wet look . Thank you for your nice comment.
