I ended up free handing the piping. I think it was the heat and humidity that made all my pin holes disappear. I just couldn't see them on the cake. I felt that I really got the design down without tracing it. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Practice!! I had a dummy cake set up that I kept practicing on the week of the wedding. That was extremely helpful.
