Rachael Teufel answered:
Petit fours are tricky and rarely have perfect sides. There are a few ways to improve the look, but they take far more time and typically are not worth the extra effort. The method I showed is the quick option with a lighter cake. Using a very dense cake is absolutely best. You could also individually ice each cake with buttercream before coating or apply multiple coats or poured icing.
