Butterflies & Roses

Share a little about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create this cake The cake itself was red velvet. Covered in vanilla fondant. Flowers, leaves and butterflies made from gumpaste. Non-toxic coloured powders. Wire. Floral tape. Base Board. Ribbon. Silver candle stand. Heart shaped cake pans. What are you most proud of? The rose bouquet. To make the flowers most realistic, the challenge is to make the petals as thin as real ones. Once dry, they are as fragile as porcelain and will shatter easily if banged against each other or dropped. Putting the bouquet together requires a lot of patience and skill to prevent breakage. All the petals and leaves are individually shaped and coloured using non-toxic powders and paint brushes. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Make the flowers and butterflies first to give them time to dry in-between steps. Ideally, make them over a period of a few days and have them completed prior to actually making and covering the cake.
