Having never used rice crispy treats to mould a design (the TNT crate is all rice crispy treats), and also having never having covered a sphere cake in fondant or modelled using fondant, I was really pleased that this cake came out exactly as I had hoped. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Go for it! I was amazed this turned out as well as it did. Using home made rice crispy treats (lots of recipes online) for the box was much easier than making and covering another cake which I didn't really need and lasts for ages. It also seems to be much more stable & solid & carried the weight of the bird cake easily. The sphere cake was quite difficult to cover in fondant but being able to hide all the creases & folds on the bottom was helpful. However....a lesson I have learned when making a cake of this size and weight is to make sure your fridge has very secure shelving. 30 seconds after I placed the finished cake in the fridge, the shelf it was on collapsed and the cake suffered quite a bit of damage. Fortunately it was towards the back and I was able to mend most of the damage but the bird suffered quite a nasty head wound... no wonder it was angry!!!
