It’s not too late to treat yourself to some cute Halloween fun! This tea towel and mug rug can be made in just a few minutes.
Let’s start with a tutorial for the mug rug
What you need:
- 5″ square of fabric in each white, orange and yellow (3 total pieces)
- 2 pieces of background fabric cut to 7″ x 9″
- Two 7″ pieces and two 9″ pieces of rickrack
- 1 piece of batting cut to 6½” x 8½”
- Fusible adhesive for appliqué
- Candy corn template (free download)
Preparing the appliqué
Trace the candy corn pattern pieces onto fusible web.
Rough cut the fusible pieces and lay them on the wrong side of the candy corn fabrics. Press the fusible to the fabrics following the manufacturer’s directions.
Cut the fused fabric along the traced lines.
After removing the paper backing from the fusible, place the shapes on the center of the 7″ x 9″ background fabric. Fuse the shapes into place, again following the directions on the package.
Assembling the mug rug
Layer the batting and fabric with the fused shapes, right side up. The batting is smaller than the fabric, and this will prevent bulk later. The fabric will extend 1/4” over each side of the batting.
Lay the rick rack along the edges of the right side of the fused fabric as shown above.
Lay the second 7” x 9” piece of fabric, right side down, on top of the rick rack, fabric with applique and the batting.
Pin through all of the layers.
Sewing the mug rug
Sew a ¼” seam around three sides of the mug rug. Trim the extra ends off of the rick rack, and turn the mug rug right side out.
Secure the open side with a scant topstitch seam and continue topstitching around all the sides of the mug rug.
Secure the candy corn appliqué pieces with a small zig-zag stitch around the edge of each shape. This will also quilt the mug rug.
Notice the mug rug uses white thread in a small zig zag for decoration and the tea towel uses black thread in a blanket stitch. Use a thread that will blend with the fabric if you prefer, and substitute any stitch that you like to use for appliqué.
Tea towel directions
Make the candy corn appliqué following the steps in the mug rug directions.
Simply fuse the candy corn to a store-bought towel. Then topstitch a length of rick along the entire width of the tea towel.
These are so quick and easy that you can make a dozen for teacher gifts or prizes. Happy Halloween!
