A FREE Easter Bunny Quilt Block Tutorial

Sew a cute bunny quilt block, just in time for spring. Watch out, though — these bunnies multiply fast. You might find yourself with an entire quilt's worth before you know it!

12 inch Bunny Quilt Block Tutorial

This traditionally pieced bunny block finishes at 12". Use pretty florals to sew an Easter throw pillow, table runner or even a light quilt for those chilly spring days. (P.S. This would make an adorable baby quilt!)

Floral Bunny Quilt Blocks

Materials

You will need less than one Fat Quarter to piece the bunny body; a Fat Quarter of background fabric; and scraps for the eye, ear, nose and tail.

Cutting instructions

Refer to the diagram and list below to cut the pieces necessary to piece the block together. Label all units as you cut them.

Bunny Quilt Block Piece Diagram

Background Fabric:

  • A – Cut ten 1½" squares
  • B – Cut three 1¼" squares
  • C – Cut two 1½" x 2½" rectangles
  • D – Cut one 2½" x 5½" rectangle
  • E – Cut one 6½" x 2½" rectangle
  • F – Cut one 1½" x 4½” rectangle
  • G – Cut: one 2½" square
  • Top and bottom framing strips – Cut two 10½" x 1½" strips
  • Side framing strips – Cut two 1½" x 12½" strips

Bunny Body:

  • A – Cut one  1½" square
  • C – Cut two 2½" x 1½" rectangles
  • G – Cut one 2½" square
  • H – Cut two 1¼" x 2½" rectangle
  • L – Cut three 2½" x 3½" rectangles
  • M – Cut one 4½" x 2½" rectangle
  • P - Cut one 7½" x 4½" rectangle

Eye and Nose:

  • B – Cut two 1¼" squares

Ear and Tail:

  • G – Cut one 2½" square
  • J – Cut one 1" x 2½" rectangle

Piecing the block together

Stitch all seams with a ¼" seam allowance. Press seams open to reduce bulk unless otherwise noted.

Step 1:

Draw Sewing Lines on Indicated blocks

On the back of all A and B units and the back of Bunny Body G, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner.

Step 2:

Sew the Top of the Bunny Ear

Sew the top of the bunny ear. Align a Background A square right sides together with the top left corner of a Bunny Body C unit. Stitch along the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼". Press the seam open.

Place another Background A unit right sides together with the top right corner of the Bunny Body C unit. Stitch, Trim, and press open as before.

Trim the unit to 2½" x 1½" if needed.

Step 3:

Piece the Middle Ear

Attach a Bunny Body H unit to each side of the Ear J unit to create the middle ear. 

Step 4:

Sew the Bunny Ear Together

Stitch the ear units together with another Bunny Body C unit as shown. Set the Ear unit aside.

Step 5:

Sew the Feet Units
Align a Background A unit right sides together with the top left corner of a Bunny Body C unit. Stitch along the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼". Press the seam allowance open.

Align a second Background A unit right sides together with the bottom left corner of the last Bunny Body C unit. Stitch, Trim, and press open as before. Trim the unit to 2½" x 3½" if needed.

Stitch a Background C unit to the left of the foot unit. Press the seam allowance towards C. Trim to 2½" x 4½" if needed.

Repeat Step 5 to sew a second foot unit.

Step 6:

Sew the Feet Together

Stitch the feet units to the Background G unit, noting the orientation of the units. Set the Foot unit aside.

Step 7:

Stitch the Top of the Face

Align the Bunny Body G unit right sides together with the bottom right corner of the Background D unit. Stitch along the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼". Press the seam allowance open. Trim the unit to 2½" x 5½" if needed.

Step 8:

Stitch the bottom of the face

Align a Nose B unit right sides together with the top left corner of a Bunny Body L unit. Stitch along the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼". Press the seam allowance open.

Align a Background A unit right sides together with the bottom left corner of the Bunny Body L unit. Stitch, Trim, and press open as before. Trim the unit to 2½" x 3½" if needed.

Step 9:

Stitch the Face Unit together

Stitch the top and bottom of the bunny's face together, noting the orientation of the units. Set the Face unit aside.

Step 10:

Stitch the Back unit

Align 2 Background A units right sides together with the top corners of the Bunny Body M unit. Stitch along the marked lines. Trim the seam allowances to ¼". Press the seam allowances open. Trim the unit to 2½" x 4½" if needed.

Step 11:

Piece the Bunny Tail unit
Align 3 Background B units right sides together with the top left and right corners and bottom right corner of the Tail G unit. Stitch along the marked lines. Trim the seam allowances to ¼". Press the seam allowances open.

Align the Bunny Body A unit with the bottom left corner of the Tail unit. Stitch, trim and press as before. Trim to 2½" x 2½" if needed. Set the Tail unit aside.

Step 12:

Sew the Bunny Body unit
Align an Eye B unit right sides together with the Top left corner of a Bunny Body P unit. Stitch along the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼". Press the seam allowance open.

Align a Background A unit right sides together with the bottom right corner of the Bunny Body P unit. Stitch, Trim, and press open as before. 

Stitch the Background F unit to the right of the Body unit as shown. Trim to 8½" x 4½" if needed. Set the Body unit aside.

Step 13:

Sew the Back unit to the Tail unit
Sew the Tail unit to the right of the Back unit as shown.

Step 14:

Add Section E to the Back-Tail unitSewn Back and Tail with E Background

Add the Background E piece to the top of the Back/Tail unit.

Step 15:

Add the Ear to the Back and Tail unitSewn Ear to the Back and Tail unit

Stitch the Ear unit to the left side of the Back/Tail unit.

Step 16:

Add the Body to the previous unitsSewn Body with Ear and Tail

Add the Body unit underneath the Ear/Back/Tail unit.

Step 17:

Add the Face unit to the previous unitsSewn Body with Face, Ears and Tail

Stitch the Face unit to the left of the previous units.

Step 18:

Sew the Foot unit to the bunny bodySewn Bunny

Add the Foot unit to the bottom of the sewn units. Trim block to 10½" x 10½" if needed.

Step 19:

Add the Top and Bottom Frame pieces

Add the two shorter frame pieces to the top and bottom of the block. Press the seam allowance toward the frame.

Step 20:

Add the Side Frame pieces

Add the two remaining longer frame pieces to the left and right sides of the block. Press the seam allowance towards the frame.

Trim the block to 12½" x 12½" if needed.
