Geodes have been around for many, many years but are most recently making their way into more traditional decor. How could they not? They are gorgeous works of nature! Like so many, I love anything that sparkles. Trying to get a cake to truly sparkle can present its challenges, but I love a challenge and was excited to take on a project letting the geode take center stage for this cake design.
I was recently asked to create a cake for an event celebrating the launch of First Look Events, a boutique planning company owned by Brynn Swanson. I was given an amethyst geode as inspiration and was told to "get as creative as you like with this!" I knew that I wanted to create a show-stopping cake and use the geode as the focal point, creating an awe-inspiring visual experience for the guests. And hence, the three-dimensional geode cake took shape.
I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to cakes and prefer to make everything edible whenever possible, so I set out to create a cake that looked like a real geode but wanted it to be completely edible. As someone who loves to experiment with new concepts, I started to play with sugar crystals to see what I could come up with. Sugar crystals are certainly nothing new, but it’s been fun trying to find different ways to use them. The geode is made from a combination of granulated sugar and rock candy that was then crafted with multicolored modeling chocolate. It's all completely edible.
I love that this cake maintains its elegance and simplicity while the showing off the beauty, depth and complexity of a real geode.
I would never have imagined that this cake would go viral and be seen on top sites like Buzzfeed, Bored Panda, the front page of Yahoo! News and many others. It was such an honor to have my worked seen by millions of people around the world.
