Ready to make decorated valentine sugar cookies? Let's get baking!

To make heart cookies with roses you will need:

  • Heart shaped sugar cookies (you can find my favorite recipe here)
  • Turquoise piping and flood consistency
  • Red piping and flood consistency royal icing
  • Medium pink piping and flood consistency royal icing
  • Light pink piping and flood consistency royal icing
  • Light green stiff consistency piping icing
  • White piping consistency royal icing
  • Disposable icing bags
  • Couplers
  • #2, #1.5, and #65s pastry tips

Step 1:

Outline the cookie with a #2 tip.

Step 2:

After a few minutes, fill the outline with flood consistency icing and wait until the cookie is completely dry. This can take anywhere from a few hours or overnight, depending on where you live.

Step 3:

When the base is dry, use red flood icing to make a dot on the top right hand side of the cookie. Size really isn't important, but for reference, this one is about the size of a pencil eraser.

Step 4:

Let the red dot set, then add more dots using different colors near or around the red dot. Remember, there is no right or wrong place to add dots, do what looks best to you. The most important thing to remember is not to let two wet dots touch one another, otherwise they will run together.

Step 5:

Let the dots dry (this will not take as long as the base) then use a #1.5 tip to add a coordinating swirl. If the end of the swirl does not lay flat against the cookie, use a toothpick to gently push it into place.

Step 6:

Next use green icing and a #65s tip to pipe tiny leaves around the cluster of roses. It is not necessary to wait until the roses are dry, but be careful not to damage the swirls with the leaf tip.

Step 7:

To give the cookie a romantic feel, use a #1.5 tip to pipe clusters of three tiny dots. This is an easy way to give a cookie the look and feel of lace without  much piping.

Step 8:

Package the cookies individually, or arrange a platter with coordinating cookies to create impact.

Decorating tips:

  • Use only one shade of icing for the roses to cut down on time and color mixing
  • Add visual interest by pairing detailed cookies with simpler designs

Fancy Valentine's Day cookies are the perfect way to show that special someone just how much they mean.

How much icing do you make of each color? When I’m baking I almost always have way too much excess icing.
