A lot of sewists make plans to devote weekends to sewing, but we often get distracted by little things. Suddenly it's Sunday night and we never made that bag, hemmed those pants, or finished that skirt. Do you need a weekend to relax and think of nothing but sewing? Mark your calendar for March 20-23, 2014, because Sew South Retreat is the perfect getaway for you!
Sew South is a modern sewing retreat in Charlotte, N.C., where sewing fanatics can get together to talk about project ideas, inspire each other, and do a lot of sewing. This is the second year that Sew South is holding this marathon sewing weekend, and you have a chance to get in on all the fun.
Jennifer Mathis from Ellison Lane Quilts started the Sew South event because she saw a need for a sewing retreat on the East Coast. It isn't always possible for many sewing enthusiasts to travel to QuiltCon or Sewing Summit, because they're quite far away. Sew South is a great alternative that doesn't require a lot of travel for East Coast sewists. Of course, West Coast sewists are welcome, too!
Most of us crafters spend time online sharing projects and finding tutorials for projects we want to make (ahem, Pinterest). But we rarely have the opportunity to meet other sewists and share ideas in person. The real advantage to this is that you can learn new techniques and tricks from each other and put them to use right away.
Sew South is happening March 20-23, 2014, in Charlotte, N.C. Tickets go on sale October 1, 2013.
With your ticket, you'll be able to participate in four different sewing workshops. You'll also get uninterrupted open sewing time (no dirty dishes, no chores to do -- just you and the machine!) and the option to participate in special swaps. The ticket also includes three breakfasts, two lunches and a cocktail reception. You'll go home with finished sewing projects, not to mention a swag bag that any sewist would die for.
Make sure you mark your calendar for October 1st and buy your tickets right away, because space is limited to 50 attendees. This small group size ensures everyone gets a chance to meet and sew together, plus get plenty of individual attention in workshops. You'll make tons of new sewing friends, and maybe even meet up with sewing friends you already know online.
You don't have to be a seasoned sewist to attend. Sew South Retreat has workshops that will challenge an advanced beginner, but there will be plenty of help along the way from other sewists. Check out some of the projects from last year to get an idea of what you'll be sewing. Last year's attendees walked away with knowledge on everything from paper piecing to duffel bags and frame clutches. (Are you feeling excited yet?) Attendees also learned how to use a serger and adjust a pattern for pants. The retreat covers every type of sewing, from quilting to apparel.
Tickets for the Sew South Retreat are $340 and will go on sale October 1st. They can be purchased here.
