Humpty Dumpty Doll
A nursery rhyme classic comes to life
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again!
This classic nursery rhyme thrills and entertains kids today just as much as it did generations ago. In this workshop you'll make an adorable Humpty Dumpty doll with jointed arms and legs perfect for posing and playing.
This project can either be made with new materials, including a few quarter yard cuts of quilting cotton and some doll buttons, or sew it from a high thread count pillow case and the fabric and buttons from a men's shirt. In the process of making Humpty Dumpty you'll learn how to make straightforward button joints as well as the more sophisticated gusseted button joint. Step-by-step photos and clear written explanations will guide you as you sew this classic toy.

- Quilting cotton, ¼ yd/22.9 cm, or an old men's dress shirt
- Cream quilting cotton, ¼ yd/22.9 cm, or a high thread count pillow case
- Black quilting cotton, 10 x 12 in./25.4 x 30.5 scrap
- ¼ in./0.6 cm double fold bias tape, 13 in./33 cm
- Floral quilting cotton for bowtie, 6 x 6 in./15.2 x 15.2 cm scrap
- Embroidery floss in white, beige, light brown, black, and light pink
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing, 5 oz./141.7 g
- All-purpose thread (white, brown, and black)
- Extra-strong thread (white)
- Two metallic buttons
- 12 small buttons (collar buttons or doll buttons)
- Disappearing fabric marker or chalk
- 5 in./12.7 cm doll needle
- Embroidery needle
- Freezer paper
- Hemostats or a chopstick for turning (optional)

I am a plush pattern designer, craft book author, and sewing teacher. I design patterns for stuffed animals from my home studio in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Sewing dolls and toys is my passion! I strive to make my patterns easy to follow by including step-by-step photos all along the way and writing clearly. My toys are clever and fun to sew. I think you're going to love making them! I have a master's degree in education from Harvard and taught middle school social studies in Mississippi and Massachusetts before becoming a textile artist and the mother of three girls.
