Interested in learning to quilt? Been wanting to try a Lemoyne star quilt block, but feeling intimidated by y-seams or hand stitching? Or, maybe you just need a fabulous hand-made housewarming gift? With this fun quilting Workshop, you can do it all without worrying about getting stuck along the way.

In this Workshop, I'll show you how to machine sew your star together and then turn it into a lovely quilted trivet - using step-by-step pictures and instructions. And, if you get stuck or need help, just ask me! I'm happy to answer your questions and share tips all along the way.

Now, all you have to worry about is choosing some fun fabrics for your star! Go with geometric prints to get some movement in the block. Choose contrasting colors to make the star points sparkle.

You Will Need:

  • Star Fabric: 100% cotton in 2 pattern designs and 1 solid
  • Backing Fabric: Approx. 15 in. x 15 in.
  • Binding Fabric: 65 inches, cut into strips 2.5 inches wide
  • Cotton batting, same size as backing
  • Heat resistant batting (such as Insul-Bright), cut same size as backing
  • Cotton batting, same size as backing
  • Sewing machine, with quilting foot and walking foot
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Quilting thread
  • Basting pins
  • Iron

As the author of two knitting books, Sensual Knits and Pure Knits, I've been part of the crafting world for many years. Thank you for you wonderful instructions... I'm a newbie having only started quilting this year and I managed to follow your instructions pretty well. One little suggestion, perhaps you could use a contrasting thread when showing seam instructions and this would make it easier to see your stitch line. I also came unstuck with the joining of the binding at the end... didn't get the cutting instructions, altho this was probably down to my inexperience... next time I'm going to get this tho, and I ...

Good Modified Trivet Made Easy  November 19, 2011

The instructions were clear and this was my first star. I am not fully confident with my abilities in Free Motion Quilting, so I did echo-echo (that's my term for diamond cross-hatch) quilting. Still, it looks pretty good for my first try.
