In New Orleans, around about 1945 or so, my MaMa taught me. little bitty girl then, but that was BASIC KNOWLEDGE. That included tatting, hairpin lace, and insertions -- lace within a fabric object. I have her wedding slip, handmade, full of insertion; now 100++ years old. All our girls since my generation have married in it. Handwork and gardening are my BLISS.
