I began my sewing career at the age of 12 by going to Ben Franklin?s in Indian Village and buying fabric to make my one- year-old sister a summer dress. I had previously pleaded with my mother to allow me to use her sewing machine. That was my first experience at sewing using a machine and I fell in love. Over the last 45 years, I have been sewing such things as wedding dresses, business suits, brides?-maid dresses, men?s sport jackets, men?s dress shirts, women?s shirts, skirts and slacks.
As my sewing has evolved, I find more pleasure from making smaller items such as purses, hats and gloves. I love purses and enjoy finding patterns and fabrics that make up enjoyable bags.
I earned a Bachelor?s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Sociology in 2000 while raising two daughters who graduated from UNL about the same time. I promised myself after graduation, I would learn how to quilt. I took several classes at Southeast Community College and began quilting. I have made quilts for my grandchildren and baby gifts for friends. Quilting offers another technique in making bags that I recently incorporated into my purses.
With the advent of new products for the home sewer, there are so many things to learn and understand about threads, needles, stabilizers and fabrics. Since I have very little formal training in the area of sewing, I signed up for a conference to learn about the products, how to use them and to develop new techniques in sewing and embellishing fabrics. I am a certificated Sulky Teacher following the three-day conference and now can dazzle the fabrics to create unique looks.
One of my goals is to create a classroom setting for young ladies or gentlemen 10 years and up who want to learn to sew but do not have the financial means to have a machine. My idea is to work with an organization in securing donated machines and teach them how to use the machine and bring out their creativity.
