When I was around 5 or 6, an elderly Russian neighbor taught me to "spool knit" to make hot pads. back then, all thread spools were made of wood and you made a loom by nailing 4 finishing nails into one end of the spool, you looped yarn around each nail and made a cord that you then coiled & stitched together for a hot pad..
