My desire in quilting began in the 1970's when we visited my husband's Aunt Aggie. She made quilts to be used with her Singer sewing machine. She never let any fabric go to waist. She would go to the Good Will Store and buy "house dresses"---remember those? She would bring them home, cut them into strips and sew together. She always had strips she was sewing.
