I was introduced to sewing when I was in junior high school. My first year was a bomb. I wanted to take wood shop, but I was female and back then it was forbidden. I was railroaded into sewing and cooking. I hated the first year of sewing. I think my sewing teacher hated it even more!
The second year, I had a different teacher for sewing. My teacher, Gracie Graham, found out I was interested in mechanical things and "asked" me to help her service and fix the sewing machines! Oh man, I loved it! Of course, in order to test the machines, one had to learn how to sew, eh?! Not only did I learn how to sew, I also learned how to service and fix sewing machines as well.
During the second year of sewing, Mrs. Graham taught me so much. I went from the typical drawstring bag and lop-sided pincushion all the way up to making lined suits, dresses, hats, and lined coats. To this day, I remember Mrs. Graham with great fondness. If you think about it, she was one clever cookie in how she got my interest!
