I started sewing at a young age. I was inspired by watching my mother sewing so skillfully on the sewing machine. She set me and my twin sister up with some fabric and a pattern and we had a great time. It kept us out of her hair and busy for days. And we were able to dress our life size dolls in new dresses. And then as we got older, we were required to take a sewing class in school. I aced it because I love sewing so much and continued taking sewing & crafting courses all the way through school until I graduated. I stopped briefly, but started again a year later when I was staying with my aunties in Florida. They were very inspiring and did a lot of sewing too. Another auntie in Florida owned a sewing store, so I was up to my eyebrows in fabrics and joy. When I met my husband a year later and we got married, I started sewing shirts for him. Flannel shirts at first, and other things for myself. And when our children came, I made clothes for them as I could afford the fabric. Sometimes the cost of sewing was higher than going to a discount store for clothes, so I didn't always sew for my children. Money was tight. I made quilts for them though. And now I need to make quilts for all of my grandchildren. And other sweet little things like pretty dresses for my granddaughter who loves to wear them.
