I have been sewing since I was ten when I hand stitched a pair of PJs for my baby-doll. In 1973 my sewing won the “Future Home Maker of the Year” award at my high school. During the 80s I owned and operated Nancy’s Cottage Crafts—an independent small business making teddy bears and handmade baskets. Over the years I have sewn everything from lingerie to bridal gowns, teddy bears to upholstery. I am currently the owner of Mitten Maven—making unique mittens, hats, scarves, and jackets from wool.
All my unique items are handmade from recycled woolen clothing. This is an important part of my mission—to “upcycle” discarded woolen clothing and blankets. The term “upcycle” means to recycle by giving the discarded item more value than it had before. I have achieved that goal by turning cast-offs into eco-friendly “wearable art.”
