Some years ago I started a girls club at our church. I've had girls ages 5 - 16. Part of our work was teaching the girls to sew. Even though I consider myself a rookie, I enjoyed it. We made pumpkins, scarecrows, dolls, stuffed kittys, aprons, PJs etc... I learned as I went. Taught the girls the parts of the sewing machine and it was so exciting to hear those machines humming.
