For me knitting is my "escape" and my method of meditation. Keeping my hands busy in the rhythmic flow of my knitting frees my subconscious mind and problems get worked out, solutions come to me, resentments are released and stress melts away. Born and raised in London, Ontario, Canada, I learned to knit (Mom) and crochet (Aunt Dot) when I was about ten. I knit and crocheted all through school and university and then set it aside for awhile except for making crocheted baby blankets for each of the "first" babies in our extended family. I moved to upstate NY in 1973 and then to the South several years later. At that time, the only place I could find yarn was at Michaels and the selection was limited so when I went home to Canada to visit I would go to the mill outlets and bring home a suitcase of yarn to keep me busy until my next visit home. Then came the resurgence of tknitting and crocheting. We have a couple of terrific yarn shops now in Savannah and my favorite is "Unwind". I am married to a wonderful guy who fully appreciates my obsession and is always happy to find me at least one new yarn shop when we travel on vacation. Now a grandmother, I knit for my granddaughter and for her American Girl Doll. I carry my knitting or crocheting with me everywhere. When I first picked up my needles again a few years ago I was the only one in the crowd at a meeting, standing in line to vote, sitting in the doctor's office knitting away. I couldn't finish a project without someone wanting to purchase one of whatever I was making. I have brought many of my friends "back" to this old craft as well as initiating some new ones and we are having a great time. With all the new yarns the only problem is finding to time to start the next project (or rather, finish the last three projects so I can start something new!) I also quilt (harder to finish those big projects!) and sew for my granddaughter and for my church.
