I've made clothes since I was in Junior High and took my first sewing classes. I remember one time, when I had ordered a pattern and it came in the mail that I actually cut up a new sheet of my Mom's to make a new outfit for myself. We lived out of town at the time, and my Mom was at work, so I helped myself to the new cotton material. If I hadn't done such a nice job of stitching, I think she would have been very upset, but she never let me know that she was! It was a pale green and made a darling outfit! I'm not sure I would have been so charitable if I had been my Mom!
When our children came along, I made most of their clothes, sister and brother outfits when they were toddlers. They soon outgrew that tradition, and I continued to make a lot of our daughter's special dresses until she really wished to have store bought clothes like most of her friends.
Quilting began when our first grandchild was on her way. She is now nearly seventeen. I've knitted, cross-stitched and embroidered since I was fairly young, thanks to my Grandma and my Mom. I picked those crafts up again after our grandchildren began to arrive. Since then I have also learned to needlepoint so that I could do a special Christmas Stocking for each of our five grands.
I've continued to make clothing, mainly for the grands, including costumes, which have been passed from one to another. One of the outfits that I made for our first granddaughter when she was about five, an Easter dress has been worn and loved by all three of the girls. That makes a Nonie proud. That's the name that our first grand gave me.
