When I retired I was an elected state officer for the Order of the Eastern Star in Minnesota (a fraternal organization), so I went to many of the different groups that are a part of Eastern Star that do social and charitable projects. Two were the Eastern Star Sewing Units in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. They make lap robes, (fleece, crocheted and knitted and quilted) for Cancer patients at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Hospital and pillows, walker bags and other items for nursing homes in the area. It was a great way to do something for others and socialize with friends while doing it. The quilts we (I am now a member) give away are simple tops and tied quilts.
There were several very good quilters in the groups, and since I have sewed all my life, I tried a few "real" machine quilted items. The quilting bug bit me, and I am now thoroughly addicted to quilting. I bought a good Elna Quilting machine from one of my Eastern Star friends (she works at a local quilting store), and the first year after I finished my state officer duties, I made four twin or lap quilts for auction at charitable events for Eastern Star.
I have taken the rec room away from my husband, and am slowly making it into a quilting room for myself. (Can't wait to get rid of the Organ I never play now, and a few things so I can get a "REAL" cutting table and sewing cabinet!!)
