I taught myself to knit when I was in junior high school using a Boye "Teach Yourself to Knit" booklet. It was definitely on-again-off-again over the next 30 years, but when I found Ravelry and the world of independent dyers it was all over. I'm a veterinarian and mom by day, and knitter at night. I've also done quite a bit of Hardanger embroidery and counted cross stitch.
