I started sewing clothes in Junior High and kept on while my children were little. My mom gave me her old Singer sewing machine that came in a table. I quit sewing for about 10 years and in 1992 my sister taught me how to quilt. I made my first quilt, which was a wall hanging with my new Viking Huskavarna and hand quilted it. I sewed a couple of quilts and started going to retreats. I then started making necklaces and selling them at high-end stores instead of sewing. In 2000 I started quilting again with my sister and haven't stopped. 2 years ago I quit working and now quilt almost every day. In 2003 my dear sister passed away from cancer. All of her girlfriends each made a quilt block and her dearest friend put the quilt together and had it quilted and we tucked her in her coffin with her pajamas and slippers and robe and her new quilt. I received all of her quilting items, which was a lot. She loved to make blocks but not put them together. So we had quite a few quilts that were blocks only. She loved to embroider and we found two quilts that were all hand embroirered. We gave most of the quilts to her daugher and son but her best friend and I kept a couple for ourselves and put the blocks together. My sister was making me a quilt when she became ill and I didn't know if she had even got around to putting the blocks together. She had shown me the fabrics she was going to use. Well, we found my quilt and it was a whole quilt top!! I had it long armed and at the next retreat her friends bound it for me so I didn't have to do any of the work on the quilt from my sister. It is called "Broken Dishes". I love it. I have two grown children, a son who is an Xray technican and computer analysis and a daughter who works in a sleep lab. They both live in the San Juan Islands. I visit them as much as possible. It's an 8 hour drive for me. Every year we meet at the Oregon beach and stay in a beach house for a family vacation. Oh, what fun! But no quilt shops around. My husband works for the railroad and is gone on a train quite a bit so I have the house to myself. I use to be a conductor for the railroad until I was dragged by a boxcar and had to have two surgeries. I'm fine now. Anyway, while he's away from home, I sew a lot. I don't get as much housework done as I would like to. I am doing my spring cleaning right now though. I have a very happy life. I do miss working though. I love Craftsy Classes and enjoy making quilts along with the vidoes!
