I've had to think long & hard to remember when I started crafting hobbies. I'd have to say while we lived outside of Eielson AFB, Alaska with long winters,no television, no people around for neighbors and 2 little baby boys, I had to go to Woolworth and buy my first Beginner's Crochet Book, some yarn and taught myself.
