I have had three distinct ?careers? in my past; secretary, desktop publishing before it was known as ?desktop publishing? LOL, computer aided graphic arts designer, and was working as a Registered Nurse. Then in 2000 I was injured in a car accident and unable to continue to work, at all. To keep my sanity I began designing and creating beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces that I see as ?wearable art?.
You may ask why ?Dress Your Ears?? It is actually very simple. I first began this journey after the injury. The pain, and the medications I had to take made me have the attention span of a gnat and all I knew how to make was earrings, that doesn?t take long term memory. LOL
After a while I realized that I had upwards to 362 pairs of earrings, so I decided I wanted to sell (duh) and I wanted to learn more. That?s when I really became determined to expand my knowledge as well as my confidence.
I began with online research, watching ?How-to" videos and read as many books, magazines, web sites, etc. that I could to expand my knowledge and push me, that?s mainly the reason I changed the name of my business; "Dress Your Ears... and so much more!"
Now I spend my days perusing the internet through the plethora of images; some are vintage but some have been artificially antiqued, handmade versus home made, etc., for inspiration! I still spend quite a bit of time sketching out new designs, just waiting for the money tree to come to fruition so I can afford to make everything in my sketch books, I?m on my 5th one!
I found that designing and crafting jewelry truly helps me cope with the two chronic pain diseases, both knees that are to be replaced very soon, and last year was diagnosed with a non-specific Auto-Immune Disease, which one it may be is up in the air at the moment, and the medications that go along with all of the above mentioned diseases., help at times and then there are times that it all caves in on me so I've just learned to go with the good days and slow down on the not so good days, and move very little on the bad days. I've taken on a "C'est la vie!" attitude, French for ?that?s life?. There is one thing that I would like people to come away with from all of this is... that you can overcome almost anything to pursue a dream?
