My love of food and cooking started at a very young age,
I remember as if it were yesterday, collecting disparaged jar lids and using them as pots and pans; I was about 5 years of age.
We didn't have the things that we so greatly take for granted; like running water, electricity, stoves, refrigerators, etc.
My dad was paid once a month the equivalent of 100.00 US dollars to support a family of six.
I remember mom would go to the open market and get beans, rice, oil, flour, powdered milk, and sugar. If there was any money left over, she would get a couple of apples or mangoes, and that was a big treat.
What mom didn't know, or I thought she didn't, was that I would skim off some of the rice, beans, and what ever else I could, and hide it away so I could cook it myself on my ‘jar lid’ pots and pans.
Then, in 1966, when we came to this country, my step-grandma taught me how to make cakes! It was love at first site!
I LOVE to see the faces of family and friends when they taste something I have created and love…it truly fills my heart with joy!
