My Mom encouraged me to sew. She said it was an important skill to have and a great hobby. My sisters and I learned how to design our own patterns or tweak existing ones which made sewing exciting. Quilting became an interest when I fell in love with all the Amish quilts at bazaars. You can personalize quilts and make memorable heirlooms.
