At 16 i was homeschooled, got bored and taught myself to knit. From there i honed my skills and seriously taught myself how to crochet too(people tried to teach me when i was younger, didn't stick). When i was 18 I started to bead, then i got pregnant at 21 and all crafts stopped. at 24 I got bored again and started reading through the book. i spotted tatting and went from there...i stopped and it irritated me i couldn't teach myself this...so i picked it back up, and has not stopped, i got a bit bored, and started doing a bit of bobbin lace...thats fun, but hard...and so now my boys are 5 and one is asking to learn how to tat...:)
