Maggie's Craftsy Classes

Sugar Berries, Leaves & Blossoms

Put the supporting players in the spotlight as you learn how to replicate sweet little blossoms, delicate ivy leaves and blackberries that look like they were plucked right off the bush — all in gum paste. Veteran Craftsy instructor Maggie Austin brings together these beautiful “background” elements to create charming bouquets that stand on their own. You’ll be amazed at how easily you can assemble lifelike blackberries — with individually hand-formed seeds — using Maggie’s innovative bag-and-shake technique. Hypericum berries and ivy leaves will add a naturalistic touch as will tiny sugar flowers hand-painted in beautiful detail.

Southern Sugar Flowers

Trendsetting cake artist Maggie returns to Craftsy to teach two of the American South's most iconic and beautiful blossoms. You'll learn how to create a sophisticated white-on-white design featuring delicate dogwood flowers and branches or the magnificent magnolia. Maggie shows you her signature techniques for cutting, veining, assembling and dusting gum paste flowers with subtle, yet realistic shading. Create an elegant floral presentation that will be the highlight of any event, no matter where you live. This class includes a bonus lesson where Maggie shows you how to make your own gum paste.

Fondant Frills

Have you admired Maggie Austin's sophisticated frill cakes from afar and wondered, "How in the world does she do that?" Well, wonder no more – Maggie reveals her top-secret techniques on Craftsy! In this class, Maggie demonstrates every step involved in creating her signature frill ombré cake topped with sugar paste cabbage roses. Along the way, she shares industry know-how on cake display, artistic advice on color combinations, and her compelling cake story: how she overcame a career-ending injury, pursued a dream and built a thriving cake business.
