Quilt Artists Guide to Color (1h 55m)
Why study color theory? Color is energy, and the best way for you to control that energy is to learn to harness it. Just like people, colors behave differently in combination with other colors. The system of how colors interact is based on centuries-old theories that stand to this day, even as we add new and intriguing information about how light is seen by the human eye, how our brains interpret it, and how color affects the human psyche.

Learning to harness the energy of color, understanding the interaction of colors and becoming acquainted with as many varieties of color as possible will make it easier and more enjoyable for you to make beautiful, interesting and successful quilts, jewelry or whatever kind of art your heart desires.

So, come along with instructor and quilt artist Heather Thomas as she introduces you to a system that just might rock your world.

Quilt & Color: Playing With Stitch, Paint & Ink (2h 04m)
Have you ever wanted to create a highly complex quilt design with an appliquéd look but just can’t bring yourself to have to do all that fine handwork? Well, this technique is a fabulous way to achieve an appliqué look without having to do any hand-stitching at all. Instead, you get to doodle on the surface of a quilt sandwich using your sewing machine and free-motion foot. Then, just like back in kindergarten, you get to color in the lines!

In this class, art quilter Heather Thomas will provide you with tons of ideas, drawings and skills to create some truly amazing quilts. First she will help choose a great design to work with and show you how to transfer the basics of that design to fabric. Next, she will dispel the myth that free motion quilting is difficult as shows you how to stitch out your chosen design. Then she will introduce you to the world of fabric paints and inks and instruct you on how easy it is to achieve delicious shading and bold luscious color as you fill in your stitched motifs and finish up your unique quilted and colored work of art.

As part of this class you will have access to downloadable assets including a complete list of supplies needed and over 60 of Heather’s designs for your use.

Contemporary Quilted Collage (2h 16m)
Collage is a quick and simple way to create art quilts with lots of freedom — freedom to change your mind and play!

The word “collage” comes from the French, “to glue” which is exactly how this technique begins. In this class you will learn the importance of composition, fabric selection and stitch design and how they all come together to make an attractive, finished art quilt.

Art quilter and author Heather Thomas will introduce you to the idea of using nontraditional fabrics as she guides you through your fabric selection. Then she will discuss various types of iron-on adhesives to use as the “glue” in your collage. Next, while playing with composition, she will teach you all about using your selected fabrics to create contrasts, focal points and visual interest. Then she will help you understand how to choose machine quilting designs and varying stitch densities to bring out the best in your art piece while pushing back negative space. Finally, she will guide you through squaring up your quilt and provide you with several options for finishing the edges of your work.

If you’re looking for a new, looser, more intuitive ways of creating, then take this class with Heather and give the art of collage a try.

Making Quilted Fabric Bowls (1h 39m)
This class features a fun and easy way to make quilted bowls in a variety of shapes and sizes using all your favorite fabrics and easy machine quilting. You’ll want to make tons for yourself and even more to give away as gifts. This is a fun project for any skill level!

Using heavy stabilizer, some batting and fabric scraps, you can create your own one-of-a-kind round, square or oval vessel.

Instructor Heather Thomas will review how to layer the base of the bowl and the process of measuring and cutting the wedges that will be used to form the bowl. Once that is complete, she will go over a variety of ways to add decorative fabric layers.

You can quilt the fabric bowl with simple or complex designs. Heather will show how to manipulate the bowl under the foot of your machine for the best quilting results.

Finally she will demonstrate how to embellish your bowl with decorative edges, from couched fibers to hand beading.
