Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Bag-Making Basics: Reversible Tote & Zipper Pouch »

Instructions

I enjoyed the video instuction and instructor. Some new tricks to apply to other sewing projects.
Then I used it as a take-off for some fabric that I had been holding to use.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Whimsical, Cute

Materials

Cottons and batics to feature a block that I wanted to include in the design, Now to make the rest for the quilting group I belong to....

What was your inspiration?

I had been holding onto some fabric that I wanted to use in a project for my quilt group. I liked the idea of a pouch as we can all use those for carrying all sorts of supplies.

What are you most proud of?

The design of the additional fabric worked well. Zippers went in easily after the neat trick in the course. And so I was able to make one for each of the ladies in my quilt group!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Consider some fun use of fabrics and size alterations. Children would love these for school supplies, small toys, etc.

Another consideration when putting the zipper in. I unzipped the top down a bit so it didn't interfere when starting to add the zipper and again when topstitching - even with the zipper foot attached. Then just before I came to it, I stopped, pulled the presser foot up, turned the fabric to reach it and zipped it past where I was, and continued to finish the edge. For me, it seemed to make it a cleaner and straigher seam edge.

When you said the design of the additional fabric, what do you mean? did you add onto the pattern to make it bigger?

Yes, I added a 3 inch strip to the sides of the block I cut from the sewing/quilting ladies fabric I had. This made the block a 7 1/2" by 13" rectangle for the bottom piece. Then added a 4" x !3' for the top and this created the rectangle when using 1/4" seam allowance overall. Did some recalculating with the original measurements but really any size works as long as you allow for the zipper. In this case, 12" so made the pieces 13".
