Instructions

This was a project that was on Carol Doak's Yahoo group. we started with one of her blocks and each month... roughly, she gave us another set of "rules for the next round. for all rounds, we were to use at least one of her block patterns First round... no rules... just one of Carol's blocks. Round one pattern can be found free on Carol Doak's website ...

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Classic, Traditional, Whimsical

Materials

I chose materials that I had hunks of at home... I did need to fill in alittle with new fabrics once the project progressed.

What was your inspiration?

My stash... I didn't want to have to buy much material for this project because I didn't know how it would turn out. Also, I had not done anything in the earthy jewel tones for a while.

What are you most proud of?

That each of the rounde actually look like they all fit together. I was worried with the randomness of the process (I am sure it was not so random for Carol Doak) and the limits of having to use what you have for materials had me making choices I wouldn't have normally made.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Have fun and let go of any preconcieved designs... just let it happen when it happens. It really showed me that I could look at things a little differently... (ok I admit... I am a control freak when it comes to planning my quilts... and this one started without the plan and turned out okay!)

Round one pattern can be found free on Carol Doak's website http://www.caroldoak.com/free-quilt-patterns.php it is the center of the 2000 Member Celebration Quilt. I did not put on the borders because as you see, I had many borders to go... I will measure and get something up for the second round soon... I have to redo all the math :-S

Well done. i also participated in this project on Carol's Group. I had a ball. My quilt was all done in purples. Also from my stash. The best thing about this project is that you interpre & complete it yourself. There are a few guidelines but no Pattern as such. Go to Carol Doak's website & get some info & free ptterns and go from there. Her patterns are all foundation Paper pieced. Her method is simple & makes those points so accurate.

That's what I loved about this... We all had the same set of rules and everyone's quilt turned out so different!

I also would like the pattern for this beautiful quilt. In the "Pattern Info" section above, it looks like some information should be there but there is nothing. Showing the progression of the quilt was a great idea. Thanks.

Ther was really not a pattern, just the rules I put in the instruction section. I will post the foundations I used for everyone this weekend.

Thanks. Tracking the progression was part of the project. It was a fun group project when we could watch everyone's steps.

The beauty of this type of quilt is that you make it to your ability. Many people participated and each quilt was its own masterpiece. And they were all to the owners skill level.... This one did have alot of math.....

There really wasn't instruction. Just rules as I typed in the instruction section above. I can go back through my Carol Doak's patterns and list the foundations I used. I am out of the country for a few days. I will look them up this weekend when I get back home.

WOW! And I thought BOM was inspirational... When I grow up I want to be able to do those compass points! Very nice detail =)

Compass points are....easy with Carol Doak's paper piecing! I love it because I am very busy and I sew for stress reduction. It is easy to start and stop and still know exactly where you are at!
