Sewing: Yo-Yo Delights

Yo-Yo Delights

Instructions

Begin with a yo-yo (circle gathered around edges and pulled tight, knotted off). Bead the edges to suit purpose. Use in hair, on presents, as ornaments, and on art quilts. I bet you will find even more uses.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Home

Style: Holiday, Cute, Funky, Whimsical

What was your inspiration?

Too many beads and extra yo-yos.

What are you most proud of?

The fun had teaching workshops on how to make these.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time.
Try several repeat and alternating patterns.
Don't worry about beading distancees. Gently curve/fold your beaded thread in the arc you want. The last arc may need adjusting, but they usually just fall into place. As each arc is added, using the curving test before tacking the stitch helps.
Bury finish knot at the center.
Try rick rack, fancy yarns, etc. instead of beads.
Bead the inside gathered circle too.

I have been playing with yo-yos yet again, and will soon offer another project. If y'all like this one, you will like what is coming at you. Expect this project around the first of the year. You can find me on blogspot too. Just google my name to see the projects that are already over there with yo-yos.

I am so glad y'all are enjoying these. They are fun, and people are really delighted to receive them. I put them on packages, give them along with the tip to my waitresses (guys don't seem to appreciate them the same), and put them on clothes, purses, and hats. When you create one, please share.

Think of all the trims, which can be so expensive sometimes, around the edges. I have used yarn, upholstery edging, sea shells, and lots more. Try anything that comes to mind. Yo-yos require so litle fabric, it cannot count as waste when you are learning. Post your pics when you can. It will be wonderful to see what you come up with.
