This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sewing With Knits: 5 Wardrobe Essentials »

Instructions

Watch all the videos and then jump in and have a go as you really can't go wrong and knits are definitely not as scary as we were made to believe.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Cute, Casual, Outdoorsy

Materials

Stretch Knit Jersey

What was your inspiration?

I've seen so many tops with cut out in the shoulders and I really wanted to make one and this class was the perfect opportunity to jump in and have a go.

What are you most proud of?

That my top turned out great and it's wearable and I've already worn it several times and had quite a few compliments and have even had a couple of people ask me wear I bought it... of course I proudly said "I made it".... I think those are the proudest moments... well for me anyway :)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch all the videos and then go back and watch the appropriate videos for the project you are sewing.... and of course enjoy sewing with knits as there is definitely nothing to fear.

Chris I often look through the projects that others have done, but yours was the first to stop me dead in my tracks! it is breathtaking, you look absolutely stunning, you should be really proud of your work. I am a plus size and would love to make one similar, could you tell me the pattern no? I think you should post this picture everywhere for the world to see not just cratsy, it is way to good to keep quiet about it :-)

Hi Sue and thank you for a such a beautiful compliment! I have to admit I always feel great when I wear this top and it's definitely one of my favorites. I get quite a lot of compliments whenever I wear it as well and often get asked where I bought it... and as you know it's a lovely feeling when you get to say "I made it". The pattern is Simplicity 2634 (Khaliah Ali Collection) and this is view F. I haven't even blogged about this top as I only started blogging about my sewing project in December at http://ChrisLucas.com.au

Oh, this is lovely! And, yes very different from the patterns in the class. It has a much more feminine edge to it, with the fluttery sleeves and empire bust line.

Thanks and unfortunately for me I have to buy all my fabrics online... it can be a bit of a hit and miss as they don't always tend to be the texture or the colours you think they are. But overall I've been fairly lucky... sometimes I have to change the pattern that I thought I would use the fabric for. I agree this class was definitely a good little investment :)

Looks like I can't reply to your reply but wanted to share this link from my blog. I have to buy most of my fabric online too. Hope this helps. http://ciscosewingblog.com/shopping-online-for-sewing-fabric-tips/

Chris, this top is beautiful! And you look gorgeous in it!!! I've enrolled in this class but haven't yet had time to go through it. This will help inspire me to find the time to get it done. A couple of lovely knit fabrics have made their way to my sewing room . . . time to stop looking and admiring and give it a go.

Hahahaha... my fingers were jumping ahead of my brain LOL... I was about to say I hadn't sewn with knits before and now I haven't stopped.... I've added quite a few to my stash to sew over the Christmas holidays. They're super easy and fast to make... they've actually boosted my sewing confidence as well :)

WOW thank you sooooo much Meg for the wonderful compliment. It was actually because of you and your wonderful class that I was inspired to finally give knits ago and now I'm hooked on them and will never fear them again. Thank you so much and I do hope we get to enjoy another class with you here on Craftsy as I'll be signing up for sure!

I think they more flattering for a fuller figure too as they help create an extra line that draws attention vertically plus I like how they feel as I don't really like things too close around my neck.

Hi Davesmom... I got them fabric from Fabric.com as I just loved the colours. I did use facings and interfaced them... I'm thinking next time I might make my matching bias tape and use that instead.
