Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Classic Tailored Shirt »

Instructions

I made 3 muslins over 2 days to finally get a shirt fitting that fitted me well. I also worked out an elbow length sleeve with a simple buttonless cuff.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic

Materials

100% shirting cotton from UK

What was your inspiration?

Ready to wear shirts have never fitted me well resulting in them being uncomfortable and unflattering for me to wear. Although I am meant to wear shirts at work I often wear tshirts. As I am spending more time outside the office now I need to have some shirts to wear and look more presentable.

I figured if I spent the time to make a really good muslin that was properly fitted to my shape that I could make any number of comfortable and flattering shirts.

What are you most proud of?

My collar is improving and I did a better job of matching stripes this time.
Also for persevering with the muslin - I am really happy with the final shirt.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is an excellent course - I re-watch sections of it with every shirt I have made.

What a beautiful shirt. It looks like you have done and excellent job with the collar, which is the part of shirt making that is most challenging to me. It inspires me to try this class.

I too was nervous of collars ... but it's not hard with Pams very detailed instruction on all the tricky bits. If you want to make shirts I would recommen this class.

Hi!, I love it!!! You have done a fabulous job, and the stripe matching could not be better! You will get a lot of wear out of this shirt, and I hope that you keep making them. Thanks so much!! Pam

Thanks Barbara - I am actually enjoying working with stripes - there are some advantages such as it is easy to identify the grainline and also acts as a guide when stictching

Thanks Scheri ... the fabric was really nice to work with, almost as nice as the italian cotton.
