What was your inspiration?
I love knitting lace and I also love wearing hats. All mine are wide brimmed so it seemed a natural to try this pattern. Having done this one I'm ready to try different thread, and different lace designs. It took more time to prepare the hat block, hat stand, make the hat band, etc than to knit the hat.
What are you most proud of?
Having completed the entire process so the hat is wearable. The original pattern is a little vague on shaping and having overcome those challenges, I feel accomplished.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Know how to make boiled starch. Choose your materials and needles with care - a tighter mesh holds starch better and provides more surface onto which the starch can adhere. Either have a hat block or make a "water proof" one. Consider how you will be making a hat band (sweat band) -- and how you will apply it. This band provides the major stability for the hat and prevents the crown from "stretching" with use.
