Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Design It, Quilt It: Free-Form Techniques »

Instructions

This is my original design based on theories and motifs from Cindy Needham's "Design It; Quilt It" class. I didn't have any stencils so I used my own designs to FMQ this placemat. This is the 1st of 4 that I am working on.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Casual, Funky

Materials

Batik top fabric, Warm & Natural cotton batting, and Shadowplay quilter's cotton backing. Quilted with Superior Threads' 40wt Magnifico poly thread.

What was your inspiration?

I've had some placemats sandwiched and sitting around for a few months, and they seem like great pieces to try out some of these new design skills I'm learning!

What are you most proud of?

I really LOVE doing the cathedral windows background; it's slow going, but looks great (even though they are a little wonky in places...)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

LOVE this class!

Thanks, that's one of my favorite feather designs also. It's easy to do and you can add all sorts of variations for different looks. I originally tried it after viewing a youtube video of something similar and it has evolved into this.

Thank you Cindy! You've really helped me with exactly how to lay out wholecloth designs and I'm having a great time with them. I've got 3 more of these placemats to do and am going to be trying out different designs on each one. ;-)

What ever you do, don't let anyone use these for food!! It would be a travesty if someone spilled something on it and caused a permanent stain.

Awesome as always Wendy. Besides your outrageous quilting, I love the thread choice.

Very cool. I was thinking about trying out my new skills on a table runner but have yet to attempt it. Thanks for sharing these!
