This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Design It, Quilt It: Free-Form Techniques »

Instructions

I was practicing some design elements on this quilt (echoing and layering the feathers).
The embroidered piece is something I made from the Stupendous Stitching Craftsy class. (it is 4" x 10.5").
I only did a few quilting lines behind the embroidered piece so that the area would remain puffy, and the embroidered piece would appear to float on the quilt. The embroidered piece was tacked ...

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Traditional

Materials

Rust coloured Kona cotton, and cotton batting with half a layer of wool batting on top. All the free motion quilting is done with Invisafil 100Wt thread. The piece is 15" x 20".

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to make a frame for a contemporary art quilt. I thought the contrast between traditional and modern quilting would be interesting.

What are you most proud of?

How the whole piece turned out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Have fun and try new things.

This is so classy and creative. I really like the divisions between quilting areas. Do you backtrack on your feathers? If so, I couldn't see it... what is your secret? Monofilament?

Thanks for all your kind comments Karen! There is lots of backtracking on the feathers. I use 100Wt Invisafil thread (by Wonderfil) - a very fine, coloured, polyester thread. It is my favourite for FMQ. It is just like 100Wt silk thread, but much cheaper, so great for practicing.

I just got up and got to start my day by seeing your project. What a fabulous way to start the day with beauty and creativity. It is just gorgeous. I love that you put the second piece on top of the rust piece. It is a super art piece. It was just a joy to see.
