What's Black & White and Red all over

What is black & white & red all over?

What is black & white & red all over?

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stupendous Stitching: Adventures in Surface Design »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Funky, Mod

Materials

Cotton, rayon, metallic & variegated threads, various cords, trims & yarns, beads & feathers.

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to try a very high contrast piece and for some reason thought of the old children's riddle -- What is black, white & red all over? I normally prefer using batiks so this was outside my comfort zone.

What are you most proud of?

I used a couple of omni-motion stitches (about an inch wide) -- I usually avoid those because I find them hard to control.

Traditional black and white quilts are not my cup of tea. This one, however is fantastic! It is so much fun to get out of our comfort zone. Than you so much for sharing.

this is really cool! Is that black & white variegated thread? I've never seen that before (and I think I'm going to have to find some of that!).

Thank you. The thread is Robison-Anton #2363 -- it's black, white and gray. I really like the inclusion of gray -- thought I needed something a little softer than just black & white.

I really love this piece. It is so dynamic with the tension of the squares and diagonal lines. It has a strong focal point but just enough whimsy to make it interesting and fun. Working out of your comfort zone is challenging but I think it can help you discover your inner artistic talent. Thanks for sharing!

The more I look at this, the more I like it so I think you're right, Carol -- need to move out of that comfort zone more frequently. It was really a fun class!
