What a Hoot!

Owl wallhanging

Owl wallhanging
Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Cute, Casual, Whimsical, Funky

Materials

Fabrics made of cotton, metallics, sequins, ribbon, gold thread, cotton thread, very thin cotton wadding (batting), odds and ends from my sewing box ...

What was your inspiration?

I'd been making Christmas decorations (some of them are on my Projects Page) and I'd made a Christmas card wall hanging for a friend. Her son liked it so much he asked if I could make a wall hanging with an owl on it to take with him when he went back to university and this is the result. The stitching is pretty ropey as it was the first thing I made on my new sewing machine, which has lots of decorative stitches and I wanted to experiment. However, Christopher didn't mind! I finished it off with some Suffolk Puffs (yo-yos) in the bottom corners and at the top instead of buttons where the hanging ribbon is attached to give it a bit of depth.

What are you most proud of?

Making something different and unique, even if it's far from perfect. I'm usually very "picky" and like everything to be as perfect as possible but, somehow, it didn't really matter in this case.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Let your imagination run riot and have fun!

That's the beauty of it - Quilting doesn't have to be perfect.....It gives it that funky look with all the various stitches and looks really cool!

Thank you for saying that - it makes me feel better about my "ropey" bits!

Pat I love the owl and although I am NOT a fan of yo-yo's - in this one they look absolutely adorable!

Thank you - he's a very long way from perfect, but it gave me a chance to try out various stitches on my new machine.

My machine is still a bit of a mystery to me. Just bought a proper table with an inset for it at a quilt show a couple of days ago. That will enable me to have the quilting in a place where I can see it properly. At present I'm having to use the diningroom table, which is really far too high. The new table will arrive later this week and my open-toe quilting foot next week (I hope) so there'll be no holding me after that!
