Instructions

I don't sew the zipper right to the stretchy fabric, I make the facing wider and push a bit out to show then sew the zipper to the facing. This adds stability as well as an extra "punch" of color! I also add snaps to the inside of the cuffs so that they stay sharp looking when riding!

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Costume

For: Women

Style: Mod, Traditional, Funky

Materials

Stretchy fabric, satin and a thrifted black leather skirt, flat jewels, sport zipper and crystals.

What was your inspiration?

My daughter needed a new shirt for showing and she picked out the fabrics. To buy a shirt like this is crazy expensive and I can whip one out for under $30 !

What are you most proud of?

The fit is really nice and I love the way the accents turned out!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make sure you pick the right type of stretchy fabric. If you pick one with not enough stretch, it won't fit!

Thank you! Hopefully, next month the DD can wear it in a horse show. She has only got to wear it the one time. I have made this shirt in many colors and different colored collars and cuffs. It usually turns out well, except for the one time I sewed the zipper inside out! The DD had to zip it from the inside because I wasn't ripping it out!

I like this shirt so much! It's so stylish and so original. And you're so right when you say details like this would cost a fortune to buy RTW. Fantastic! And it looks wonderful on your daughter!

Thank you so much! I got the fabric at JoAnn's in the swim/dance section. It is a very stretchy material. The collar and cuffs are satin with heavy interfacing for crispness.

Did the pattern fit true to size or did you find you had to do much altering? It appears your daughter is slender and im wondering how this flattery would fit on a middle aged women's figure?

the pattern fit pretty true to size. I add a touch more to the size by having the zipper sewn to the facing. It just depends on how stretchy the fabric is, but the pattern explains how to test the strtchiness. You can also make this shirt in a less stretchy fabric and there is a different pattern in the envelope for a shirt like that. The website where you can buy the pattern also has a lot of photos of other shirts that others have made for even more ideas!! Hope this has helped!

Very nice job. I actually made this same shirt for a client with a stretchy knit, and applique embellishments, so I know first hand what a time intensive project this "simple" shirt can turn in to! I think your accents are perfect for the fabric, color, and style of the shirt.
